Saint Patrick's Day Gifts
It is widely thought that Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, drove the snakes out of Ireland into the sea. He can't really take credit for that, as the Ice Age took care of snakes long before St. Patrick came along, but he can take credit for converting many Celtic pagans to Christianity during his life.
Born a pagan named Maewyn in Wales in the year 385, he had no early aspirations of becoming Saint Patrick. It wasn't until he was kidnapped by Irish outlaws when he was sixteen and sold into slavery that Saint Patrick turned to God. Upon escaping slavery, he ventured to Gaul where he was accepted to study in a monastery under St. Germaine, bishop of Auxerre. It was during his twelve years there that he changed his name to Patrick.
Thanks to the fact that Saint Palladius was transferred to Scotland, Saint Patrick had the opportunity to return to Ireland and spread the teachings of Christ as Ireland's second bishop. He traveled across Ireland, establishing monasteries, churches and schools to assist him in converting the Irish people to Christianity. Legend has it that he used the Shamrock to demonstrate how the three separate elements of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit are united into One entity-the Holy Trinity.
Today, we celebrate March 17th, the date Saint Patrick died in the year 461, as Saint Patrick's Day. Initially, it was more of a religious holiday, like Easter, but over the centuries, it took on heavy Irish influences. It was first celebrated in the United States in Boston in 1737, but the first Saint Patrick Day parade was held in New York in 1762. Traditions call for wearing green, the national color of Ireland and the color of the Shamrock, drinking green beer and eating traditional Irish food like corned beef and cabbage or potato pancakes.
