When the Dark Ages descended over medieval Europe, the knowledge and learning of ancient Europe was lost until its revival in the Renaissance. There wa one solitary beacon of light that kept the flame of knowledge burning - Ireland. The Monastic settlements throughout Ireland kept the study of the scriptures and other schools of learning alive throughout the Dark Ages. Ireland's geographic position on the edge of Europe and the fact it is an island nation allowed it to progress in isolation while the rest of Europe declined.
